Dear future Brigitte,
I hope that you’re at least 30 years old before you read this. If you’re reading this and you’re any younger than 30 (you probably are) then I want you to stop right now. Good things come to those who wait.
You need to stop being so impatient, things don’t happen overnight. They take time (which sucks) but hey, most of the best things in life don’t come easy but sure as hell are worth the wait.
I hope that in your years of wisdom that you’ve got on current you, you’ve learn to better master your self control. There are so many bad habits and toxic relationships that you quite frankly shouldn’t be dealing with anymore. Current you wants to quit a lot of things, but whether it’s the psychological or physical addiction (or both), there is an unspoken force holding you back. Whilst this force is unspoken, it is definitely no secret. I can tell you right here and now that that unspoken force is your willpower. Your willpower to say no (or yes?) to things is simply not as strong as your want to quit. So Dear future Brigitte, I hope your willpower is now as strong as your perception is accurate. You know exactly what is a good and bad idea, but current you simply does not care enough.
Another thing current you wants to tell you is JFDI. I really hope you are not as lazy as current you is. You have so much potential which you don’t tap into simply because it will require effort. The easy life is great, don’t get my wrong. I love it. But you’ve been living it for quite some time now.. And now it’s time to get off your ass.
And you know what? Sometimes it doesn’t even come down to being lazy. It comes down to fear. So Dear future Brigitte, don’t let the fear of failure or rejection be synonymous to the fear of trying. If you want something, just give it a goddam go. If it doesn’t work out, then at least you can say you tried.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
– Mark Twain
Lastly, I want to reiterate that although tinted with negativity, this letter to you was not written with the intention of hate. I don’t want you to feel that 22 year old Brigitte was a little shit bag with no goals, aspiration or drive. Quite the opposite actually, 22 year old Brigitte knows exactly what she needs to stop doing. Not only this, but she also knows exactly what she needs to start doing. She just needs to drown out any hesitance and JFDI.
